Final Exam Preparation

Material Covered

The final exam will be 20 questions, 10 will cover the material in chapters 27 to 29, and the remaining 10 will be on material covered from the beginning of the course.

Exam Format

The exam is closed book and closed notes. Remember to bring a calculator.

The exam is on Thursday, December 21, 2000, and begins at 8:00am and ends at 10:30am.

The exam will consist of 20 questions, with a format similar to the first two exams. Each question will be worth 2 points, for a total of 40 points on the exam. The exam counts for 40% of your grade, so each point is 1% of your final grade.

Equations and Constants

The following equations and constants will be given on the exam.

Eph = hf lf = c Dl = l - l0 = (h/mec)(1 - cosq)
Dx Dp > h/4p DE Dt > h/4p (h/mec) = 0.00243 nm
a0 = hbar2/ me ke e2 = 0.0529 nm rn = n2 a0 En = -(me ke2 e4 / 2 hbar2)(1/n2) = -13.6eV/n2
f = (Ei-Ef)/h = (me ke2 e4 / 4p hbar3)(1/nf2 - 1/ni2)
r = r0 A1/3 Ebind = (Z mp N mn - Mnucleus)c2
R = |DN / Dt| = lN N = N0 e-lt T1/2 = ln(2)/l = 0.693/l
ke = 9.0×109Nm2/C2 e = 1.6×10-19 C
c = 3.0×108m/s me = 9.11×10-31 kg mp = 1.67×10-27 kg
h = 6.63×10-34 J s hbar = h / 2p r0 = 1.2 fm
u = 931.5 MeV/c2

Note that, although the equations are given, you must remember what they stand for and how to use them.

You are responsible for knowing concepts that go along with the material.

For the final you must know the values of the metric prefixes from pico (10-12) to Giga (109). You will find all of these in Table 1.4 of the text.
